Mobile Workshops: Sewing and Repair

From late March, two mobile workshops — a sewing workshop and a repair workshop — will be operational at the library, enabling sessions focused on mending, upcycling and the creative reuse of clothing and textile materials.

The workshops will be used:

  • during events at the MBP Main Library,
  • at branch libraries,
  • after the project concludes, guidelines for their use and availability to library users will be developed.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of sewing, garment repair and upcycling techniques, as well as creative approaches to reusing materials.

Workshops at Branch Libraries

The project includes educational workshops at 10 branches of the Municipal Public Library in Opole.

Sessions will cover topics such as:

  • repairing and altering clothing,
  • creative use of second-hand and repurposed materials,
  • sustainable fashion and circular economy principles.

The activities are hands-on in nature and will be accessible to participants of all ages.

Family Workshops

The project also includes a series of 7 family workshops as part of the well-established Saturday “with Mum and Dad” sessions, during which participants will together create and rework clothing items and accessories using second-hand materials.

The sessions will combine environmental education with creative activities and intergenerational integration.

Special Events

Night of Culture During the Night of Culture, open workshops will take place using the mobile workshop units, giving participants the chance to try their hand at repairing and upcycling clothing.

Book Festival At the Book Festival, a limited clothing collection created by students of the Fine Arts High School in Opole will be presented. The designs will be made from repurposed materials and will offer interpretations of the idea of responsible fashion.

Fashion Show and Charity Action

During the Opole Literary Autumn, a fashion show will be held presenting designs by Fine Arts High School students on the themes of recycling and giving garments a second life.

Items from the limited collection created by the students and presented at the Book Festival will be displayed during the Opole Literary Autumn and made available for acquisition, with proceeds going to charity.

Exhibitions and Artistic Activities

Several exhibitions related to the following themes are planned for the Main Library space:

  • fashion,
  • design,
  • recycling and the reuse of materials.

The exhibitions will be accompanied by educational components presenting the creative process and the concept of the circular economy.

One of the highlights will be an artistic performance by an artist based in Iceland, exploring themes of materials, clothing and recycling.

Panel Discussion on Fashion and Sustainable Design

In autumn, a panel discussion and accompanying events are planned, devoted to:

  • contemporary fashion,
  • sustainable clothing production,
  • design and responsible consumption.

The events will take the form of conversations with invited guests, as well as workshops and meetings with professionals from the creative industries.

Study Visit to Helsinki

As part of the project, the library team will take part in a study visit to Helsinki, during which they will visit one of Europe’s largest library makerspaces.

The aims of the visit are to:

  • explore solutions employed in modern libraries,
  • develop the team’s competencies,
  • establish international partnerships.

The knowledge and insights gained will be applied to the ongoing development of workshop and educational activities at the library.
