A Library Tailored to Your Needs
The Municipal Public Library in Opole is implementing the international project make-a-thek, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme. The project views public libraries as modern centres of co-creation, innovation and education, responding to contemporary social challenges and the evolving role of libraries, which increasingly serve as spaces for active civic participation rather than merely as points of access to collections.
Over the three years of the project, the Municipal Public Library in Opole is actively participating in its second phase by piloting makerspace activities in 2026. The pilot implementation of the make-a-thek project in Opole bridges international experience with the local needs of residents, drawing on the library’s potential as a modern centre for education and co-creation. The project is carried out in collaboration with international partners, and the MBP Opole’s involvement forms part of a European pilot of library makerspace activities, contributing to a broader programme of testing new roles for public libraries across Europe.
As part of the initiative, a modular makerspace will be established at MBP Opole — an open workshop space where participants can learn through hands-on activity, experimentation and collaborative making. Alongside this, workshops and educational events combining fashion, craft and new technologies will be delivered, designed with the real needs of Opole residents in mind and making full use of the Municipal Public Library’s infrastructure and resources.
The project promotes sustainable development, creativity and social collaboration, strengthening the library’s role as a local centre for social innovation and informal education. The project’s activities address current challenges related to environmental education, shifts in consumption patterns and the need to create accessible, local spaces for learning by doing — while embodying the values of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, inclusivity and quality of life.
